SNMP message format

10.09.2018

The abbreviation SNMP stands for Simple Network Management Protocol. It belongs to the UDP family. SNMP operates in the application layer of the OSI model. It consists of a set of standards, including the database schema and a set of data objects.

The SNMP protocol was developed to test the operation of bridges and routers. Gradually, its scope of application expanded. The standard was used to assess the operation of switches, modem racks, workstations and other equipment. Today it is used to manage a large number of devices in IP networks.

How is data transfer performed?

SNMP is a request-response protocol. The manager asks for information, and the agent sends it. Several simple commands are provided for this. The protocol uses the following network components:

    • manager application – the software installed on the administrator`s computer;
    • agent application – the program launched on the device which is under the operator`s control;
    • MIB database – the text-file database, which provides structuring of the data transferred.

To deliver messages, SNMP uses the Datagram Transport Layer Security protocol. It provides data transfer over the TCP connection. In addition, SNMP can run over OSI stacks and MAC-level protocols. The standard messages consist of three components:

    • protocol version,
    • community identifier,
    • data area.

A distinctive feature of SNMP messages is the absence of headers with fixed fields. They always include a number of fields, as well as a description of their types and sizes.
